A Local Photographer : Nawaf Al-Janahi

Born an artist, Al Janahi managed to master almost all forms of visual arts. With the perception of a director and the sensitivity of an actor. Al Janahi is truly one of a kind.

Born in 1977, Al Janahi studied cinema arts in the USA, and continued to work with Abu Dhabi TV. With his unique approach to visual arts, he managed to direct several independent short films which were recognized at international  film festivals such as Arab Film Festival, Rotterdam – Holland 2003, Ismailia International Film Festival 2003, and Clermont-Ferrand  International Short Film Festival 2005.

I was impressed reading about Nawaf’s work when preparing to interview him; after all, it’s rare to meet people who channel best of their abilities for serious art. Meeting  him, my expectations were at place; he is talented, humble, different and most of all, passionate about what he does. I personally have a weak spot for local art; I believe in the quality of the work produced and I am always disappointed at the lack of support local art receives. I shared my concerns with Nawaf who agreed with me, but with a more of a realistic approach to the current situation.

Realizing the low potential of support, Al Janahi expressed many concerns about the culture of the UAE; mainly because of the invasion of alternative thought patterns, and the prevailing assumption that everything western is better. He explained to me, that while he learnt a lot studying at the US, he refuses to neglect the importance of returning to his roots. Most of Al Janahi’s work holds subliminal message about issues he believes are important. Educating the masses remains one of his main objectives.

He also enjoys working on details; playing both roles (director and actor). Al Janahi’s has an eye for perfection; understanding both sides of work, which makes it a bigger challenge to him. His dedication has transformed him into a true artist.

“I am a film-maker, and I will always be one. It’s not a profession but a state of being.” With these words, Al Janahi sums up his professional career. Bearing in mind the obstacles he faced, he is adamant not to give up; believing in the power of one individual whose passion and confidence can usher in a change.

Al Janahi is one of those few artists that leave you speechless. It was a mixture of respect, admiration and most of all, mutual social connection. He sees the world as it is, and refuses to conform.
